'Narsinh Mehta' or Narsi Mehta or 'Narsi Bhagat' (1414-1481), was
a poet-saint of Gujarat, India, notable as a bhakta, an exponent of
Vaishnava poetry. He hailed from Gujarat and sang the praises of Lord
Krishna in Gujarati about 740 poems, called padd in Gujarati.
Mehta is believed to have been born in Talaja in present-day Bhavnagar
district in 1410 and died in Junagadh in 1480s. His father died when
Mehta was just 5 and it is believed that Mehta learnt to speak only when
he was eight years old, after a holy man asked him to utter the name of
Lord Krishna.
He was a devotee of Lord Krishna, a scholar, a philosopher and a social
reformer. The shrine of Narsinh Mehta is a revered place, where the
poet-saint used to hold assemblies, bhajans (devotional songs) and
religious discourses in the 15th century. In close proximity, is a small
temple of Gopinath, along with idols of Shri Damodar Raiji and Narsinh
Mehta.
"Vaishnava jana to tene kahiye" written by Narsinh Mehta
describing the qualities of a devotee speaks about the traits and the
ideals of a Vaishnava Jana. This devotional hymn became popular during
the lifetime of Mahatma Gandhi and was rendered as a bhajan in his
Sabarmati Ashram. It was popular among freedom fighters throughout
India. This poem is a traditional example of the concept of jiva-daya, a
form of ahimsa that comprises experiencing the pain of others and
associating it with bhakti, which is devotion to God.
