Gandhi Mandpam, Kanyakumari
Out of the 12 urns of ash after his cremation in 1948, one was taken to Kanyakumari for immersion in the sea.  At the  spot where the urn was placed for the public to pay their homage, a Memorial was completed in 1956 shaped like the Orissa style of architecture. The central spire 79 feet high is symbolic of the age of Mahatma Gandhi at the time of his demise. Every 2nd October on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Sun's rays fall exactly on the spot where his ashes were kept.
