The Ajanta caves are situated 100 km north-east of Ellora, 104 km from Aurangabad and 52 km from Jalgaon in Maharashtra.
Buddhist monks got artists to paint the walls of the caves with paintings depicting the life and teachings of Buddha, illustrations from the Jataka tales.  The paintings were executed over a period of seven hundred years and hence the style of work in the vaious caves are different.  There are no religious themes on the ceilings, but various decorative motifs.
