The four-day celebration of Chhath Puja honours Surya, the sun
god and Chhathi Maiya, the goddess Shashti. As the sun casts its golden
hue at dawn and dusk, devotees across Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of
Uttar Pradesh and Nepal, mark the occasion by purifying mind, body, and
soul in sacred rivers.
The four days of Chhath Puja–namely Nahay-Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya,
and Usha Arghya–are honoured with prayers, fasts and holy dips in the
rivers. There is historical evidence that this festival has been
observed since the Vedic times.
